Project: Ford Ka Exterior & Interior (2nd generation)
Location: Ingeni - London, England
Time: 2001
Credit: Lead Designer
The 2008 Ford Ka featured a cheerful grille, slit-eye headlights, and a spirited rear profile. Inside, the vibrant cabin showcases a striking steering wheel, refined dashboard dials, and an animated center console with various seat fabrics and trims. Design Lead Rafael Rego ensured the new Ka aligned with Ford’s “kinetic” styling while maintaining a distinct, cohesive design that harmonizes with the Kuga SUV, Fiesta, and Focus. Several months in Soho, London, were spent shaping the design, resulting in bold details elevating the Ka’s unique character and visual appeal.

Rafael saw the original Ford Ka as a “happy car” that radiated pure joy and dynamism, inviting you to drive with a grin. Even while parked, it seemed to call out for a spin, making every parking experience uniquely special. The design team aimed to capture five different personalities. Capturing this exuberance was challenging, but I aimed to refine and evolve its character while preserving its charm, making every drive a joy.

The design sought to push boundaries with innovative material choices, creating an environment that felt like an extension of your favorite spaces and products. This approach aimed to transform the Ka into a personal sanctuary, where every detail evoked comfort and familiarity, blending seamlessly with the vibrant character of its exterior.

Defining the exterior direction was both exhilarating and challenging. From a Soho, London balcony, I immersed myself in the dynamics of a compact city car and noticed that traditional access methods were impractical for tight parking. This led to envisioning doors opening from above, like a backpack. This innovative concept inspired unique storage solutions and a broader reimagining of the interior, exploring unconventional access methods. This approach enhanced the car’s functionality while preserving and amplifying its inherent quirkiness.
Marketing Focus Chart
By focusing on these areas, the marketing efforts can effectively communicate the unique attributes of the Ford Ka and attract a diverse audience that values both innovation and style, while being inviting, iconic and menacing.
Rafael approached the project with unrestrained enthusiasm, driven by the car’s innate charm. The bubbly, wedge-shaped exterior beckoned for a dynamic touch that would extend the tactile joy of the exterior into the interior design. His goal was to make the exterior as inviting to the touch as the interior.
